Pamela Anderson

Apparently Pamela Anderson got on a snowboard... her choice of outerwear (or lack of) is very interesting.

Well, at least she's wearing underwear.

Dragon

So a while ago on Facebook, I noticed that Dragon's fan page was having a contest for free goggles/sunglasses of my choice. The rules were simple... simply upload a picture of yourself repping Dragon and the picture that got the most "likes" wins. Sounded easy enough, so I submitted a picture and told all my friends to vote for me.

The end of the contest came, and there was still no update... so I emailed someone at Dragon because it looked like I was the winner and I got my answer... apparently an intern held the contest and he left the office before the end of the contest. Slacker!! They did tell me to just email them which goggles I would like and my shipping address. I chose these goggles below:

Rogue Jet Stealth

If you click that link below the picture, you will see that these goggles are one-hundred freakin seventy bucks!! $170!! That's crazy. These goggles I picked out arrived yesterday, yay!!!!!!!!!!

So so so sick... however, I didn't win them for myself, I gave them to my boyfriend because he does a lot for me and I wanted to show my appreciation in a different way than the usual "thank you." He is really stoked on them, and the lens also look really nice. I haven't rode in them yet, but standing outside with them on, they look awesome. I want some new goggles too, but my current Rogues are doing just fine... but I think I might pick these up:

Rogue Polka Clash

The Polka Clash is last year's, so I might be able to pick up a pair for cheap, and I'll be rocking the hell out of them!! I'm super stoked on Dragon, if you couldn't tell!

First Rail Jam of the Season!

On Saturday, October 17th, I entered my first rail jam of the season in Denver, Colorado, along with my friend Emily Blewitt and her brother Scott Blewitt who rides for 720 Boardshop with me. Xavier Rojas was also in attendance, as were some other friends!

I had no idea what to expect and was kinda nervous, but knowing that my friend was with me, that helped to ease the anxiety. I got to ride Loveland for a little bit that morning before heading down to Denver, which also helped!

Pic found on facebook from Randal Schroeder's album

Apparently the snow was trucked in from Loveland Pass... I think it would had been easier if they just went to a local ice rink and got shaved ice from the zambonis... that's how we did it in Missouri hahaha. Either way, they definitely put a lot of effort into setting this up.

Pic found on facebook from Randal Schroeder's album

The set up was a ride-on up box that connected to a flat box. You could also hit the flat box from the sides, but it was kinda sketchy, according to Scott, so he recommended that we hit the boxes straight on. The drop in was also steep and short. I, along with other people participating, wished that the boxes were set up a little bit further from the drop in because everyone felt like we didn't have any time to line up to the boxes once we dropped in.

The rail jam started off with practice, and I was only able to get in one run before they started the jam. They kicked it off by having all the skiers, under 18 boys on snowboards, and all girls compete together for the first heat, which lasted 45 minutes. Show time!

Once the girls, groms, and skiers heat was done, they announced people who could move onto the finals. Emily and I were selected, so we were pretty stoked about that. The funny thing is, Xavier only dropped in like once or twice, and he also got to advance. SWEET! We had a break for another 45 minutes while the 18+ dudes on snowboards went at it.

The dudes heat was done, and it was finally time for the girls to go, along with the groms and skiers. Emily and I felt like we were doing pretty good, and then... disaster! Emily was standing at the top of the scaffolding bending over to strap in, when the skier in front of her decided to jump instead of drop in, whacking her right in the face with his ski. I didn't see this actually happen, but I saw her covering her eye, and thought that she said a ski pole had went in her eye... eek!! I got so scared and thought she might be blind or something, so someone unstrapped her from her snowboard and helped her climb down, and got her to a chair to sit down. Upon closer inspection, her eye looked okay. Such a huge relief!! Unfortunately she had a little scratch above her eyebrow, and she looked like she might need stitches. My boyfriend told me to keep doing the rail jam while he took her to the hospital, so I went back in line and continued doing it. It definitely shook me up though. There was nothing I could do after that, so I went back to the jam.

Press to impress! Haha

Once the rail jam was over, Emily and Adrian were still at the hospital as they announced the winners. I was excited to find that I won second place, and super stoked that Emily won first place! Yeah, the 720 Boardshop team dominated the podium!!!! The prizes I got kinda sucked though, haha, it looked like they didn't prepare it before the end of the rail jam... seriously. I got a mens large Vans shirt, a mens Vans cap, an Airblaster... what is it called again? Clavas? This thing in blue:

Annnnd a sweet MeGlad face mask. It has zebra stripes! I'm pretty stoked on the face mask and clava as I can actually use those, but I honestly don't see any use for the mens large shirt. I'm like a Youth XL in mens shirts haha. Emily got a really sweet Vans jacket, and yes, it was a womens jacket in the proper size. I think that if they had appropriate prizes, more girls will want to come out to rail jams.

I remember I did one at A-Basin last year and I won first place, and I got a FRISBEE for a prize. Seriously, all that work for a FRISBEE? I can't be picky though; anytime I get on the podium, that gets me stoked. Well, riding powder gets me more stoked, but you get where I'm coming from!

The aftermath. Gnarly!

720 team finishing off the night with burritos and mustaches!

Arapahoe Basin

Arapahoe Basin opened 3 days ago, on Friday, October 9th and of course I was in attendance! In fact, my boyfriend really wanted to park at the beach right by the lift, so we got there at freakin 6:30am. Someone had beat us to the very first spot, some guy from Rocky Mountains Underground... sorry I forgot his name.. woops but he was real chill. We took the second spot, and not long after, someone else came by and took the 3rd spot.

Parked at the beach. It was still dark.

We set up tents and a grill which took FOREVER to fire up. We had lots of beer and lots of hot dogs for everyone, and we got people stoked on 720 Boardshop which was really rad. We gave away 720 T-shirts, stickers, and two $20 gift certificates to the shop.

Oh yeah, riding? I bought a discounted lift ticket; myself and my friends had to share that since we were all broke, haha. I'm still waiting on my pass. Everyone averaged an hour a run, seriously. The lift lines were so packed, and the park was full too. The park was awesome though; there was a picnic table, a barrel flat-down rail, a down rail and a bonk. The run was really wide and seemed like an actual resort, not just a single ribbon. I don't get why someone coined the term, "white ribbon of death." I think it's a little overdramatic. The run is really wide and really long, it actually seems like the whole resort is open because there's just snow everywhere. You wanna see a real "white ribbon of death"? Check this out:

Boreal's opening day - October 2009 - picture from yobeat.com

That still doesn't look too bad, there's practically no one there. However... just imagine Arapahoe Basin's crowd there. Now that's death right there. Such a place would earn that "white ribbon of death" title. As for A-Basin and Loveland, well, I just call it snow, lots of snow!

I hit up Arapahoe Basin again on Oct 11 and Oct 12, but with a little twist. Instead of taking the lift, I hiked up to the park both days. Being deprived of a pass rules. The first day I hiked, I found a Mountain Dew soda can from the 1980's.

Apparently this is a radio, but that's what the soda can looked like

The Mountain Dew can was in such perfect shape, seriously. That thing's been at A-Bay for what, 30 years and not a single dent to it? It was faded though, presumably due to exposure to the sun in the summer. AND THEN. I hiked on the second day to the park again, and found yet another soda can from the '80s. This time it was orange soda. Am I gonna find one every time I hike up? Haha. We shall find out tomorrow for I hike again!

Loveland is OPEN!!

Today was Loveland Ski Area's opening day... yep you read that right. On October freakin 7th!! I have never had ridden a resort this early in the season, and I'm pretty stoked. Loveland opened with an 18 inch base, which is just like my home resort in Missouri, Hidden Valley. By the way, that single trail at Loveland is bigger than Hidden Valley. I'm not joking.

It's pretty fun, they even opened with a little park, a down box then a c-box.

Apparently there's a picture of me hitting the c-box on Loveland's website... haha. See that down box behind me? It got shut down later in the day for some unknown reason... boo.

There were also a bunch of fun natural features to hit... it's really fun and even when you're riding the same trail over and over, you still manage to find new stuff to hit and you can't get bored!

Arapahoe Basin is opening this Friday, and I am super, super stoked about that!

Capita's Free Goods Friday Update

I submitted another haiku for Capita's Free Goods Friday Haiku contest. The contest doesn't end til Oct 7th, so if you're just now reading this, it's not too late to pen a haiku for free swag! But you're reading this on Oct 7th... you're screwed!

Loveland and Basin
Are racing to open first
Very soon I will shred

I lack a snowboard
My Space Metal Fantasy
Is coming to me

But not soon enough
I need the unicorn NOW
so we can frolic

On rainbows and clouds
In the land of sunshine and
powder and hot dogs

Rainbows are shot far
From the unicorn’s gold horn
Shreddable rainbows!

Instead of pow sprays,
There’s glitter and confetti
Hope you have goggles

See, the S.M.F
Is a very magical
far-off land of shred

Only entered by
Those who have a S.M.F
Very exclusive

Now you know why I
need my S.M.F to go
Ride with UNICORNS!

BOOM!

Now, in other contest news, Dragon Alliance had a facebook contest, whoever put up a picture of themselves repping Dragon that got the most votes ("likes") would win goggles or sunglasses of their choice. Apparently they don't have their shit together, because the page still hasn't been updated, (contest ended on Oct 1) and I'm supposed to be the winner... dang it I want my goggles now!! I hope they give me two pairs for not being on top of their bidnass! Dream big, right? Hehe. I sent them an email inquiring about the contest after failing to capture their attention with my tweets, so hopefully someone sees it and replies and gets all of this resolved! If they declare me the winner, I'm so getting the Rogue Original Gangsta!

Gangsta.

Ride's Special Release Movie Night

Last night was Ride's movie premiere at the Gothic Theater in Denver. Adrian, Justin, Joel, myself, and some other friends got there kinda late because the shop didn't close til 8, but we got to see some good stuff on screen. Good riding, powder, rails, everything was there. I can't tell you about music though, haha, sorry.

There were giveaways, board raffles, lots of douchebags and whores, and of course, friends and beers. The best part of the night was Justin was buying beer while they were doing a board raffle, and they called out his ticket number, so he quickly gave it to Joel and told him to go grab the board since he had to pay for his drink, haha, and Joel went and grabbed it. THEN. Here comes the best part. It was a girls Ride Compact 147, and Justin is a tall dude, so he did the most logical thing... he gave it to me!! YAY!!!!!! Thanks so much, Justin! STOKED! I broke my GNU B-Street in July, and me getting this board is incredible; now I don't have to worry about being board-less for opening day which is in like, a week! I'm still waiting on my Space Metal Fantasy 143, I have no idea when it'll come in.

147 Ride Compact

The 147 is a perfect size, I can use it for jumps and powder until I get a real powder board! Oh, and it has that LowRize Rocker that I've been wanting to try. I will definitely post up a review of this board as soon as I ride it. Thanks again, Justin!

FREE GOODS FRIDAY with CAPiTA!

Today is Capita's Free Goods friday, and they're having a haiku contest!

Possible haiku topics include:
-how sweet Capita is
-why you deserve the GOODS
-how lame poetry is
-evil scary stuff
-snowboarding
-not snowboarding
-your favorite food

I think their prizes are some clothes because they mention swag in there.... but I already submitted my haiku, I'm quite proud of it. Now we sit back and wait!

Without any further ado, here's my poem *drum roll*

I can’t fall asleep
Capita’s at my window
The wolves are howling

Capita laughing
I hear screams and shrieks outside
Peering out, horror!

Cities are aflame!
People are panicking now!
Soul-devourer waits!

Hiding under sheets
Something’s pulling at my feet
Tis you, Capita!

Capita laughing
I try to fight, tis too strong
Cast into darkness

Say your prayers, son
Last rites are being chanted
Bump, rattle, bang, clunk

Awake now, but where?
Constricted in scent of dirt
Crap, this is not good.

Hehehe, I was going with the horror-theme that Capita is all about, and I think I got the theme down.

Snowboard Magazine Women's Annual

I finally got my hands on a copy of Snowboard Magazine's Women's Annual after reading some blogs online about the magazine that piqued my interest.

Annie Boulanger on the cover, in Whistler

There's some pretty good stuff in this magazine, actually. I liked the pages about the women riders, both articles and interviews. There are some stuff in there that should be questioned though.

First of all, there's this one that bothered me.

I don't even want to talk about this article because I'm afraid I'll get carried away. There is a disclaimer in the pink words by the writer that basically says, "Don't take me seriously, I'm just gonna get retarded here." Okay, here's what it really says, word for word, if you can't read the picture (it's not the greatest quality, sorry).
"To any of you ladies out there who are serious about buying a snowboard, this will not help. See, I haven't bought a snowboard in over 10 years, I am not a girl, and I tend to lie. As the senior editor of this magazine, I should have a handle on what to look for and what not to when making such an important decision, but I don't. Fortunately, I have the ultimate gear queer, our product and photo editor, sitting to my left--he handles that sort of thing. Only because he is too busy testing stuff and assembling useful information did I reluctantly volunteer to put together the ultimate guide to buying a snowboard. So here goes... take note."
Starting off this article is:
Intuition
Buy the very first thing you see--that is, if it has pretty colors. If not, buy the second one, immediately. I once saw a board at Thrifty's Drug Depot that looked relatively legit, plus it was only 14 bucks. I'd think you'd be pretty dialed with something like that. All that matters here is that the design on the topsheet matches your outerwear colorway. Technically, your snowboard purchasing experience should end here, but if you insist on getting scientific, read on...
I rolled my eyes and read the next thing which is about "Size" and although it had a quote from that awesome movie Mallrats in it, I just couldn't read this visual diarrhea anymore. This is DUMB. Seriously. I know it's supposed to be a joke, but it's not even funny. Even my boyfriend said it was retarded and closed the magazine after reading only 3 things that this guy listed as factors in buying a snowboard. It just seems like a waste, this article could have been written to actually be useful and help other girls who want to do research before buying a new snowboard. Or even better, this article could instead explain the different technology snowboards have, like rocker, BTX, 1985, gullwing, flat kick, good old camber, etc etc. Now that would be an article I would actually read.

Secondly, there's a pathetic excuse for a "Gear Guide" tucked in this magazine. Heh, actually, I was reading this magazine on the way home with my boyfriend driving, and when I saw one of their "This season's must-have snowboards!" I shouted really loud, "NO!!!!!!" and scared him, making him swerve. Now, some of the boards they listed are good, but they only listed 5. The one I didn't approve of was Rome Detail... sure, it's a good board, but it's nothing special. I would honestly only use it if all I did was urban rails, like just drop in, hit the rail, land. That's it. The magazine doesn't mention this, and it doesn't recommend what the other boards would be good for.

It's the same for the rest of the guide, outerwear, goggles, boots... etc. Look at what they said about the Nike Zoom Force 1:
In its second year, Nike is doing it stylie once again, adding a little more flair and fun. I don't know how Nike does it, but whoever designs their boots has a magical talent in attracting the eye and credit card.
The rest of the boots are pretty much written about like that... Okay... are they waterproof? Are they soft, stiff? Do they run small, true to size, or big? Are they offered with BOA? Wide fit, narrow fit? Raaaaah.

Finally, I saved the best for last. They have models wearing base layers, and I was confused for a second looking at them... they're modeling like they're in a men's magazine.

It doesn't bother me, but I find it really ironic because it's a magazine geared for women. Tell me you open up a men's snowboard magazine and see men modeling like this:

Hmmm? I didn't think so. Either they hired whores to model for the magazine, or like Kelly Vance over at Shred Betties said,
"I’m guessing the dudes were also behind some of the photography. You know on America’s Next Top Model, where Tyra demonstrates the difference between a men’s magazine pose and a women’s magazine pose? Well, check out the models in the Base Layers section. It’s got some classic examples of the men’s magazine pose - boobs sticking out and pouty lips and all. I never knew a one-piece long john could be that sexy. Why didn’t they find a couple of pro riders for these shoots instead? If you’re really trying to help female riders, why use random model chicks? They might not be quite as big in the boobal area, but there are some pro girls that are still nice to look at."
BAM! She hits it right on! Totally agree with all of that.

Here's a random picture from the magazine to end this post with, I like it a lot.

Annie Boulanger

Oh yeah, it's snowing at my house again! Yeah winter's coming!
